Spider Veins – Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is direct injection of a solution into a vein that causes necessary injury to the lining of the vein, ultimately resulting in occlusion of that vein and its demise.
What are spider veins?
Spider veins are small red or purple veins that lie in the outer layers of the skin. They may be unsightly and painful but are not harmful. The appearance of spider veins can be greatly improved but are never really cured. It is likely that occasional touch ups will be needed to achieve the best cosmetic result.
How many treatments are required?
The size and number of veins dictates the number of required treatments to reach optimum cosmetic results. This can usually be estimated by looking at the veins but is influenced by many factors.
When will I begin to see results?
The response varies from person to person, but generally takes time to begin to see a noticeable outcome. In general, small veins begin to fade in 4 - 6 weeks whereas larger veins may take up to 4 - 6 months.
For best results, we recommend the use of compression hosiery for 5 days following a sclerotherapy session. The hose is to be worn for 2 full days and nights, then an additional 3 days while you are up during the day. Also, to achieve optimum cosmetic results in a timely fashion, there are a few things to avoid after injections:
- Hot tubs, hot baths, or prolonged hot showers
- Prolonged travel
- Strenuous exercise
- Extensive sun exposure or tanning beds
